Agrigento

Agrigento

The provincial capital of Agrigento was founded around 582 BC by colonists from Gela who originated from Rhodes and Crete. It's here (not in Greece) that you can find the best preserved monuments of Greek civilisation in Sicily. Near the river Naro, the discovery of the skull of a woman dating back half a billion years, shows us the presence of Homo erectus in the province of Agrigento. The charm of Agrigento is closely linked to the monumental complex of the Valley of the Temples. This archaeological site comprises the Temple of Juno from the 5th century BC and the Temple of Concordia also from the 5th century BC which, due to its beauty and grandeur is the symbol of the Valley. Nearby there are also some Christian-Byzantine tombs. The Valley also includes the Temple of Hercules, the oldest of the monuments built in the 6th century BC, and the Temple of Olimpian Zeus, which began being constructed in 480 BC but was never completed. It also comprises the Temple of Asclepius, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Vulcan, and the Temple of Demeter from the 5th century BC.Not to be overlooked, is the archaeological museum of prehistoric artifacts that reflects life in Agrigento in the past.

Scala dei Turchi

The Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks) is a marl cliff along the coast between Porto Empedocle and Realmonte.Time, sea, wind, erosion and the cliffs have combined to create this exceptional wall. The contrast between the turquoise sea and the whiteness of the rock is impressive, it's a sight not to be missed.
